We know futbol isn’t America’s sport, yet this goal is worth reliving. In case you missed it over the weekend, the Stoke City forward Peter Crouch had a goal without the soccer ball ever hitting the ground. The goalie kicks it halfway down the field. Moments later, the 6’7” Crouch takes the ball out of midair and volleys it into the back of the net. Manchester City was stunned and so will you after watching this highlight.

Fantasy Football SXSW Panel

sxsw fantasy

There were many great panels at SXSW, but by far the best discussion was in regards to fantasy sports. Before the expert speakers even graced the stage, the crowd was eager for what they had to say. By the end of the panel which lasted well over the expected hour, one might have mistaken the audience for a bunch of 14 year old girls at a Justin Bieber concert. The room was full of excitement with oohs and aahs. The atmosphere was intense with people holding on to every word. Guest speakers included Greg Jennings, Super Bowl winning wide receiver, Bill Squadron, the president of Bloomberg Sports, Jason Kint, vice president of CBS Sports, Stephania Bell, ESPN personality, and Clay Walker, vice president of Big Lead Sports.

The Green Bay Packer was extremely candid with the audience explaining how NFL players actually feel a sense of added pressure thanks to fantasy football. He went on to explain a personal anecdote involving a fan heckling him against the Pittsburgh Steelers. “I wanted to say something to the fan, but I didn’t want him to know he’s getting to me… and it’s fantasy football!” Greg Jennings responded of course by scoring an 80 yard touchdown. He told everyone how tempting it was to yell back at the fan which drew wide applause.

The most astounding speaker though was Bill Squadron, the president of Bloomberg Sports. Squadron emphasized, “technology can add to the operation of a sport and experience of a fan, as long as it is used correctly.” He provided examples of how Bloomberg Sports can implement technology into fantasy sports. One concept allowed fantasy players to see how many pitches a pitcher threw in a particular part of the strike zone over the course of a season. Users would be able to track a player’s at bat against a particular pitcher and go directly to live footage of a specific pitch with the click of a mouse. He then proceeded to show actual pitches from San Francisco Giants ace, Tim Lincecum. The visual displays presented were truly mind-blowing. It felt like the crowd was taken into the mindset of Billy Bean from the movie Moneyball.

The conversation ended with members of the panel diving into the future of how fantasy sports can impact other sports. Nascar and golf seemed to be the consensus answer for fantasy sports that will gain popularity in the upcoming years. The notion that fantasy sports connects the causal fan was brought up several times. This creates more publicity and revenue which is why it will continue to grow. As the technology of fantasy sports also improves, so will the final product. This ultimately will provide a positive future for the business aspect of it as well.

New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils Get Into An All Out Brawl

We have all seen plenty of hockey fights but this goes down as brawl of the year. As the NHL playoffs near this was anything but your average fight. The east coast rivalry between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils was certainly in full force. Both head coaches instigated the fight by putting their line full of enforcers into the starting lineups. Within the first three seconds of the match, helmets were coming off and punches were flying. Eventually blood covered the ice and penalties proceeded to follow. It felt like fans were treated to a boxing match rather than a hockey game. This is one of the reasons why casual hockey fans tune into the sport as these two teams did not disappoint.

Inside Look At New Jeremy Lin Book “From The End Of The Bench To Stardom”

Jeremy Lin happy

Over the last year, Twitter has helped turn two ordinary athletes into pop culture icons. Tim Tebow who once again was in the news today, and of course, Jeremy Lin. Jeremy Lin united diehard basketball junkies along with casual fans to embrace the new global super star. A new sense of joy was felt while watching Jeremy Lin work his magic. It was only a matter of time before Lin’s story went beyond the Twitter phenomenon.

From the End of the Bench to Stardom offers readers the first biography ever created about New York Knicks Point Guard Jeremy Lin. Right Fit Reading’s debut book incorporates knowledge of Jeremy Lin beyond the basketball court. Included in the biography are his childhood years, his inspiring journey from Palo Alto, California and life at Harvard University. Exclusive interviews were conducted with his Harvard coach, professors, classmates and friends.

Publishing label Right Fit Reading co-founder Ed Monagle was quoted as saying, “For anyone curious about the real Jeremy Lin, his life before ‘Linsanity,’ or the making of a basketball superstar, ‘From the End of the Bench to Stardom’ is THE must-read sports biography of 2012.”

The ebook is currently available through online outlets such as Amazon. The in-depth biography will be released across bookstores nationwide on April 2nd. The Asian point guard out of Harvard redefined what it means to be an underdog, breaking stereotypes and making fans around the globe. This is the untold story of #17 that, no pun intended, sounds Lincredible.

Peyton Manning Chooses the Denver Broncos

peyton feature

Pack your bags Tim Tebow, there is a new sheriff in town. Reports have surfaced that the Denver Broncos will be bringing along Peyton Manning as their next franchise quarterback. The deal is rumored to be 5 years for $95 million. Broncos Vice President of Football Operations, John Elway must have made an instant connection with Peyton Manning during the Broncos courtship. Imagine two Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks discussing the nuiances of the position. That conversation was 6 hours at the least.

Besides direct conversations with Elway, the Broncos make sense for Manning on many levels. Manning didn’t want to square off against his younger brother in the NFC so the AFC made more sense. Denver plays in a weak division, winning last year’s AFC West with an 8-8 record. The Broncos defense is also young and one of the best in the league. Lastly, Manning could have chosen to play in San Franciso with Randy Moss, or Arizona with Larry Fitzgerald (where I thought he would have gone). Instead Manning decided to do what he has done throughout his entire career; turn no name receivers into household names (Pierce Garcon, Austin Collie, Blair White).

As for Tim Tebow, he got a raw deal and will most likely be traded sooner rather than later. As a starter this year, Tebow led the Broncos to an 8-5 record which included a miraculous playoff performance against the Pittsburg Steelers. Head coach John Fox and John Elway never really embraced Tebow. During last season’s training camp, he was orginally delegated to 4th string behind Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, and yes, Adam Weber. We learn once again that the NFL isn’t a game, it’s a business. Tim Tebow will flourish in a new environment and unlike many of his critics, I don’t believe he is a one hit wonder.

The smart money says the highly controversial QB will land in Miami. The Dolphins lost out on the Manning sweepstakes and Matt Flynn signed with Seattle. Jacksonville is another option, although they just signed Chad Henne  to compete with the younger Blaine Gabbert. Besides football reasons, Tebow to the Dolphins becomes is a great PR move, considering Tebow’s history there. Fans will love it as well, after the team traded away their best receiver in Brandon Marshall. Rising ticket sales plus a move back to Florida would all but ensure the continuing of Tebowmania.

4 Potential First Round Upsets In the NCAA Tourney

march-madness logo

It’s not Christmas, but today sure feels like it. This is the time of year sports fans fall in love with. The NBA trade deadline means new faces will be in new places. NFL free-agency is well under way. Peyton Manning will choose his next destination any day now, and did I forget to mention the March Madness Tournament starts today. Officially it started Tuesday but does anybody really take notice until today? The key to a winning bracket is to have a mixture of solid picks with quality upsets nobody else saw coming. Here’s a look at 4 opening round teams that could be ousted by the end of the week.

#12 Harvard over #5 Vanderbilt

Maybe Linsainty has drove me insane, but there are a couple of reasons why the Ivy school can advance. Harvard has increased its win total in each year under head coach Tommy Amaker (8, 14, 21, 23, and 26). Harvard defeated ACC Tournament Champion Florida State earlier in the year. 12 seeds are notorious for beating 5 seeds anyway. While Vanderbilt is hot after defeating Kentucky in the SEC tournament, they may have peeked to early.

The Commodores have lost three straight times in the opening round to lower seeds including last year’s #12 seed Richmond. Stranger things have happened i.e. Jeremy Lin coming out of nowhere. Why can’t his alma matar win an NCAA tourney game?

#14 Belmont over #3 Georgetown

Belmont has been close in recent years but have yet to get over the hump. Georgetown has had a great regular season but have struggled recently in the month of March. Besides a loss against Memphis earlier in the year, the Bruins have been beaten by more than 5 points only once (They lost at Duke by 1 point). Belmont is a legit contender, and if you don’t believe me, just ask Las Vegas. The 14th seeded squad are only a +3.5 point underdog, giving them a strong case to pull off the upset.

#12 Long Beach State over #5 New Mexico

A complete and balanced team that has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation. They beat Xavier and Pittsburgh while losing close games on the road to Kansas by 8 and North Carolina by 6. Other tournmanet teams they have battled include San Diego State, Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas State and Creighton.  If any team is ready for the national stage, Long Beach State may be your next Cinderella.

#10 West Virginia over #7 Gonzaga

I’ll admit this is not much of an upset pick, but nonetheless, it’s a lower seed that’s a lock to earn a victory. The Mountaineers are led by two seniors in Kevin Jones and Darryl “Truck” Bryant who have had success before in tournament play. Head Coach Bob Huggins gets the edge with more experience over Gonzaga’s leader, Mark Few. In their last 6 non-confrence games, West Virginia is 5-1 against the spread. West Virginia should be able to overpower the undersized Gonzaga squad, continuing to represent the Big East.

Paul Casey’s Caddie Flips, Thinking He Won A Car. He Didn’t

caddie

College basketball tournament games and Selection Sunday have been topping sports headlines. This of course, is business as usual for March. Besides Peyton Manning and the Knicks sucking again, it’s all the sports world seems to be talking about. However, there was one other story that caused some entertaining footage for sports fans, in this case, on the golf course.

Pro golfer Paul Casey hit a hole-in-one which drove his caddie, Craig Connelly practically insane. Connelly was told prior to the accomplishment that the golfer would find a way to split the prize if he happened to make the hole-in-one. As per their agreement, Connelly believed that he had just won a Cadillac. There was one problem though. The 13th was the prize winning hole, and not the 15th. It felt like Ashton Kutcher was waiting in the bushes ready to scream “You Got Punk’d.” Ashton didn’t show, but you can still catch all the amusement at this poor caddie’s expense in video form. Sorry Craig.

Peyton Manning: The Pinnacle Of Class

manning-presser-03

In case you haven’t heard, and we’re guessing you have, Peyton Manning, one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in history, was released from the Indianapolis Colts this morning. The team he has played for his entire career, and the team he won a Super Bowl with. Watching Peyton’s press conference hammered in one consistent truth: Peyton Manning is one classy dude.

The sweepstakes for which team lands the sure hall-of-famer begins tomorrow at the latest, and there’s no telling where he will end up. At his age, he still commands a ton of money, despite the fact that one well-executed Ray Lewis sack could effectively end his career. The Saints might even put a bounty on him (too soon?). For now though, let’s sit back and watch the man speak about what is undoubtedly one of the saddest events of his life. Peyton Manning remains the ultimate portrait of class and etiquette in modern sports. Roethlisberger, Cutler and the bunch should be taking notes.

Anthony Davis Bringing Back the Unibrow

Unibrow teeshirt-brow-down-blue

Freshman Anthony Davis of Kentucky has taken the college basketball nation by storm. Davis will certainly be a top 5 if not the number 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. His talent is unquestioned, but what has us talking, and interested, is the unibrow.

It started out as a small story amongst bloggers and forum discussions in Kentucky hoop circles. Slowly the unibrow is gaining momentum throughout the country, being compared to the creepy character Margaret McPoyle from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The unibrow even has its own twitter handler (@ADUnibrow).

For those who haven’t taken notice of Davis and the unibrow, be prepared with Selection Sunday, less than a week a way. Kentucky visited the Florida Gators over the weekend and the crowd let him have it with some hilarious posters, knowing full well Kentucky might be the team to beat when all is said and done.

Things have certainly cooled down a little bit in NYC. At least as far as Linsanity is concerned. Sure, Lin is still playing some serious point guard, but with Melo back and some new additions, Jeremy is looking more like the second coming of Ron Harper than Michael Jordan. The guy that brings it all together.
