Love Lessons from Sex and the City

By: Ashley-Lynn Goldstein

It has been more than ten years since Sex and the City first aired. As we watched Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha experience the ups and downs of love we learned a little bit about relationships and ourselves. That is why I have compiled a list of my top love lessons this timeless show has to offer our generation.

1.      It’s okay to be single (especially when you have great girlfriends).

We were programmed to believe that being single was wrong until Carrie the girls came along and proved otherwise. They showed us that there are plenty of great things about being single. Carrie, the ultimate single girl, says it best when she writes “maybe our girlfriends are our soul mates and guys are just people we have fun with.”

2.  You can score out of your league.

I remember in one particular episode Miranda was on a date with a cute NYPD officer. Miranda believed that he was more attractive than her and could not understand why he would want to go out with her. She ended up letting her insecurities get in the way and after the first date he never asked her out again. In reality he actually thought she was very sexy proving that the only thing standing in your way from getting a great guy is your insecurities.

3.  Don’t ever change for a guy.

When Carrie first met Aiden she was intrigued by how different he was from her. She was Champaign and he was beer. However, instead of being herself she tried too hard to become something she wasn’t. For example when Carrie goes to the country with Aiden she tries to show him just how outdoorsy she is. In the end she proves you can take the girl out of the city but you cant take the city out of the girl. If Carrie had just been herself from the beginning Aiden would never have taken her to the country to begin with.

4. Don’t drag out a doomed relationship.
From the beginning Carrie knew that Aiden was not right for her but kept at the relationship because she was scared to be alone. The relationship was doomed form the beginning but Carrie ignored her instincts and both her and Aiden ended up getting hurt.

5. Opposites can attract.

Miranda and Steve are the classic example of how opposites can attract. Miranda is a high-strung serious lawyer and Steve is a child-like free spirited bartender. Their differences complement each other and are the reason why there relationship worked so well.

6. Never ignore the warning signs your relationship isn’t working.

From the beginning Charlotte was blinded by the fantasy of Trey that she ignored some big problems that the relationship faced. Trey had a meddling mother, preformed a lackluster marriage proposal and even had issues with intimacy. However, Charlotte married Trey and ended up having to let go of her fairytale dreams when he filed for divorce.

7. Don’t be afraid to fall in love.
Samantha is everyone’s favorite character. She has so much confidence and does not need a man to make her happy. Another reason why we love Samantha is because she shows us that no matter what we cannot be afraid to fall in love. When Samantha first met Smith she was only looking for a one-night stand. He fell for her instantly and although it took her time to get there once she let him in she really fell in love.

9.  If he loves you he will chase you.

At the end of the series Carrie finally decides to stop chasing Mr. Big and goes with Alexander to Paris. However, Mr. Big does not let Carrie slip though his finger so quickly and chases her to Paris in order to tell her he loves her. Although this is not the most realistic of cases I do believe in the lesson. If he loves you he will chase you.
