Ryden Malby (Alexis Bledel) had a plan. Do well in high school, resulting in a great college scholarship. Now that she’s finally graduated, it’s time for her to find a gorgeous loft apartment and land her dream job at the city’s best publishing house. Every post grads dream, right? But when Ryden’s college nemesis steals her perfect job, she is forced to move back to her childhood home. Stuck with her eccentric family – a stubborn do-it-yourself dad, an overly thrifty mom, a politically incorrect grandma, a very odd little brother – and a growing stack of rejected job applications, Ryden starts to feel like she’s going nowhere. The only upside is spending time with her best friend, Adam – and running into her hot next-door neighbor, David. But if Ryden’s going to survive life as a post grad, it may be time to come up with a new plan…

The Campus Socialite team was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend the advance screening in NYC on August 16th. Although finding a job after college might be a drag, watching this movie was a pleasure.
(My Friends And I At Graduation)
Many of us post grads can relate to this movie; graduating from college is a brutal wake up call and not finding a job is like a permanent snooze button. We become frustrated and confused about how our lives are supposed to turn out. It can be one of the hardest points in our young adult lives. Suddenly we are torn away from a world of 3 hour work days (that’s with a heavy course-load), summer vacations, spring breaks, and stress-free weekends, and are dropped into adulthood before we can even begin to process the rapidity at which this new chapter of our lives began. Now just as we’re getting over the endless hangover that was our last four years of college, we’re expected to jump right into a career. It can be a lot to take.

Well, take your hands off that proverbial snooze button, because those extra five minutes won’t bring any job opportunities along with them. Get yourself out of bed, and go after what you want. Times are hard right now, but we don’t need to beat ourselves over the head with that idea, there is always something out there and it’s up to you do to your best to find it. Don’t give up hope; keep on plugging until you land your dream job. It may take a little more effort, and a little more time than you thought it might, but network, network, network until you are blue in the face! Send that resume out everywhere and connect with people on a daily basis. You WILL get feedback eventually. Just be patient. The hardest part is figuring out exactly what you want to do, and once you have a handle on that you’re already ahead of the game.
I really enjoyed Post Grad, and not just because I love a good chick flick… but I also happen to be in the exact same place as the main character right now. I was able to understand and sympathize with much of what Ryder was going through and was forced to come to terms with some of the harsh realities as well as amazing prospects that go along with being a “post-grad”. There is also great life lesson that shines through at the end of this movie… but I won’t spoil it for you. Instead, I definitely recommend adding this to your list of flicks to finish off the summer with.
