San Antonio’s Famous Middle Eastern Restaurant: Jerusalem Grill

by: Hassan Barzani (UTSA)

Jerusalem Grill is a Middle Eastern/Lebanese restaurant and hookah lounge located here in San Antonio. The restaurant is off of Ingram Park Mall and tucked into the elbow of a strip center. The cafeteria-style place has a range variety of foods. Jerusalem Grill is the finest Mediterranean Restaurant in San Antonio giving you a truly unique dining experience for the friends and family.

This is a great atmosphere, great tasting food with fresh and quality ingredients, for a full Middle Eastern-Lebanese menu. The selections are ranging from garment salads in a rainbow array of colors, to stewed grilled and roasted meats, crispy edged chicken shawerma served on silky hummus, shish kabob, and the Middle Eastern style meatloaf with vegetables.  The wide variety of food and deserts offered at a desirable price available indoors or outdoors on the patio. Select from Falafel, Hummus, or Grilled Kabobs or Lamb, beef or chicken, and offering over 20 kinds of salads and many vegetarian dishes, Shawerma and Turkish coffee.

One of their famous dishes includes a creamy and compelling hummus of chickpea and tahini.  Other dishes, such as the strained yogurt dip called labneh, were especially good as accessories to companion plates. A blend of labneh with mahamara on pita, for example, was outstanding; the tart plate of cucumber with dill and yogurt seemed to work well with eggplant. Also, few meat dishes they have is a lamb kabob, a moist and appealingly spicy kafta kebab of spiced ground beef formed over a skewer for grilling, and a chicken shawarma sandwich.

The meat for shawarma, which can be made from beef as well.  It is cooked on a hollow cone with a fiery core and sliced off for assembling into the sandwich. The meat itself can be spiced with the likes of cardamom and allspice, but it is the sauce of tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and yogurt that defines the classic. Slipped into pita with cucumbers, tomatoes, parsley, onion, and even pickle.

The city of Jerusalem may have more than its share of tensions these days. At the same time, Jerusalem Grill appears to have arrived at a comfortable style in the “Alamo City”.  This place has so much to offer from previous generations, our generations and future generations in regards of culture in San Antonio.
