Sneaker of the Week: Nike Vandal High Premium Screwed Up

bradwellen@precioustimeny.com

Nowadays, it seems like everything that appears broken, tarnished, or beaten up is the newest craze.  From ripped and painted jeans to shirts with intentionally cut holes in them and of course the continued obsession with Lindsay Lohan’s career, we just can’t get enough of damaged goods.  Some of the most expensive and trendiest gear money can buy seems like it was scooped up at the Salvation Army and the NYC hobo look has never been more in.  Just take an A-list celebrity like Colin Farrell, this guy has enough cash to adorn his upper lip and chin with a permanent golden goatee, but he dresses like he raided Kevin Federline’s closet and is now in a competition for world’s biggest douche.  Not all grungy looks are bad, however, as Nike has discovered a way to combine the roughness of the streets with their unparalleled, eye-catching design in the Vandal High Premium Screwed Up.

vandal (noun) - one who willfully or maliciously defaces or destroys public or private property.  Derived from Germanic people that overran Gaul, Spain, and northern Africa in the fourth and fifth centuries A.D. and sacked Rome in 455.

In a word, vandals are badass.  Just like their kielbasa loving ancestors, today’s vandals wreak havoc in communities – but they get their message across through a much different method.  What authorities may consider vandalism, many others consider art and one of the truest forms of expression available to the creative individual.  Graffiti design has evolved into a pop culture phenomenon and its ties to hip hop music and the underground scene has propelled some “vandals” from outcasts into masterpiece innovators.  Nike pays homage to the vandal with their “Screwed Up” kicks that combine the comfort and class of a hi-top with the edge of their novelty lo-top Dunk-style sneakers.

Nike’s Vandal High Premium Screwed Up appeal to all footwear and art lovers who are looking to make waves as soon as they lace up and take a walk outside.  The Vandals are a member of the Nike pack that was released for New York, Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago and are an extremely rare edition limited to just 92 pairs.  The concord/metallic silver trim complements the shiny purple candy paint base in a shoe that is impossible to look away from.  $160 is the price tag on these graffiti gems and they can be found only at Osneaker.com.
