The Nerd’s Word: Deliver Your Presentation with a Touch of Class

bradwellen@precioustimeny.com

Studies show that public speaking is the number one fear in the United States, ranking above even death and rattlesnakes – yes, people are more afraid of talking in front of an audience than confronting a venom spewing reptile. For many individuals, giving a presentation can lead to nervousness, anxiety and fear. Of course this poses a dilemma, as nearly every student is, at some point in their college career, required to speak before their classmates as a requirement for one or more classes.  The Nerd is here to quiet your fears and as you read on, you will soon learn how to comfortably deliver a winning class presentation.

Step 1: Be sure that you understand the requirements of your presentation. Is it a persuasive or explanatory demonstration? How long do you have to make your presentation? Are you able to use visual aids or handouts?

Step 2: Decide if you will be using PowerPoint, slides on an overhead projector or a whiteboard. Typically, using some type of presentation software will enhance your project and keep your audience engaged.

Step 3: Organize your presentation and practice, practice, practice. Rehearse in front of friends and ask them to critique you and give you feedback.

Step 4: Make sure you don’t speak too fast. It is common to speak more quickly when you are nervous. This will make it harder for your audience to understand your points and connect with you during your presentation. Practice slowing down your speech and tape record yourself if you have to so you can hear how you sound.

Step 5: Develop good eye contact. The best way to connect with your audience is to maintain good eye contact. Memorize as much of your presentation as you can and use your note cards as a last resort.

Step 6: Ask your classmates and instructor for feedback. They will be able to give you areas for improvement that can help you in future presentations.

Presenting your ideas and work to a group of people may seem like a daunting task, but once mastered, it is an asset to be called upon not only in the classroom, but also in the meeting rooms of the business world.  The winning combination of Nerd Energy drink and the six-step plan from above will calm your nerves, boost your concentration and ensure that you look the part of the knowledgeable student when you stand at the front of your lecture hall.  Look out next week as the Nerd serves as your compass to help map out your course schedule for the semester.
