3 Reasons Why Baby Boomers Are Leaving the Workforce

It’s an interesting time for the job world. Many of the workers from the Baby Boomer generation who have been in the workforce for years are retiring and a new generation is moving in. In some cases, it seems like the Baby Boomers are planning to work into their old age, but there are many reasons why they are choosing to transition from working to retirement.

  • Retirement Options: The Baby Boomers are known for being the richest, best cared for generation to date. The Baby Boomers came from parents who had just lived through World War II. Following the war, the economy was doing ill and all of the soldiers were ready to get home and start a family. The Baby Boomers grew up with great privileges which followed them through adulthood. They are also known for throwing out old traditions and redefining the American way of life. They did it with the civil rights movement, free love, and anti-war protests, and now they are redefining how Americans retire. There are a lot of reasons to retire later, but a recent study has shown that almost half of the Baby Boomers who have reached the retirement age of 65 are fully retired, while many more are partially retired.

  • Working with New Technology: It’s no secret that technology is find its way into the workplace more and more. Recent generations are more familiar with many kinds of tech– they were the first generation to grow up with home computers that they were able to use, they saw the switch from dial up to high speed internet and wifi, and they now walk around with incredible, tiny computers in their pockets. These are the people who are just starting to enter the workforce, and they’re bringing their technology with them. The Baby Boomers don’t have the advantage of growing up with technology in their lives as much as recent generations. Knowledge transfer services can help fill those gaps, but in many cases there have been so many changes to the workplace that Baby Boomers are eyeing retirement.

It’s Financially Responsible to At Least be Prepared to Retire Early: Even if someone loves their job and doesn’t want to retire right away (which is the case for many people), it’s still responsible to plan to retire early. No one can predict what kind of health issues or changes in the workplace are in the future, and having a plan is a safety net in case someone is unable to keep working.
