90’s Cartoons: Where Are They Now?

Growing up in the 1990s, I was exposed to some great cartoons, animation, and original TV programming. From “All That” and “Salute Your Shorts” to “Rocko’s Modern Life” and “Doug,” 90s kids were spoiled.

There are so many characters I remember fondly, so I got to wondering where these characters would be now if they had grown up, too. Here’s a look at some of my favorite characters and where I think they ended up over the past 10 or so years.

Helga Pataki: The Stalker

Helga was a student alongside Arnold on the hit show, “Hey Arnold.” Helga taunted and teased Arnold at school and in front of friends, but in private, she was madly in love with him. It was probably because of her unibrow and tendency to get violent, that her feelings weren’t reciprocated.

Her delusional love affair with Arnold led Helga to a lawsuit years later for stalking. Her chewed-gum statue of Arnold was discovered by her friends who made her confess her sickening love for Arnold.Unable to leave him alone and lead an Arnold-free life, Helga continued to harass Arnold and his new girlfriend, forcing the police to get involved. Arnold got a restraining order against her and she now resides in a mental institution.

Roger Klotz: The Drug Dealer

Roger Klotz was Doug’s arch-nemesis on the beloved 90s cartoon, “Doug.” Klotz was the mean kid in school who had a crush on Judy, Doug’s sister. Not only could the green-skinned bully intimidate people in the hallways, he was also a ballet dancer and lead guitarist in his band.

Since his days torturing Doug at Bluffington, Klotz took a different turn to make money. Even though he lived in a mansion and didn’t need the money, Klotz became Bluffington’s most well-known drug dealer. His speciality is marijuana…he figures since he IS green, he can SELL the green. His days are now spent strumming his guitar along to Bob Marley songs and eating beets in between bong hits.

Tommy Pickles: The Harvard Student

Known for being the smartest baby in the play-pen, Tommy Pickles was everyone’s favorite Rugrat. Tommy was the mastermind behind the adventures he had with Chuckie, Phil, and Lil. Armed with his plastic screwdriver, Tommy could turn any afternoon into an awesome one complete with defeating the show’s villain, Angelica, Tommy’s older cousin.

He grew from a smart baby to a smart teenager and excelled in academics, eventually earning a spot at one of the country’s most prestigious universities, Harvard. Being penned by Harvard’s newspaper as “the next Zuckerberg,” Pickles creates video games and codes in the comfort of his dorm room. Pickles has already sold one of his games to Playstation and is the first self-made teenage millionaire who still attends college.

Eliza Thornberry: Likes Animals a Little Too Much

The show “The Wild Thornberry’s” premiered on Nickelodeon in 1998. The cartoon followed the Thornberry family as they traveled the world searching for unusual animals to capture on film. The Thornberry’s daughter, Eliza, had a special talent where she could talk to animals. After years of traveling with her family and going from jungle to jungle, Eliza had more friends who had fur, than those who didn’t.

Her time spent with her family caused her to love animals more than humans. Literally. Eliza now lives in Tijuana and indulges drunk college kids and kinky townies with daily donkey shows. She does this for money, and when she goes home at night, she returns to her partner of 10 years, Dizzy the horse.

Daria: The Award-Winning Author

Daria Morgendorffer was one of cartoon’s first real emo-kids. “Daria” aired on MTV in 1997 and followed Daria and her best friend, Jane, as they tried to navigate high school. Full of satire and quick-witted comedy about pop culture, the show was not just any other cartoon. It was basically the one you left on if you unexpectedly found it on TV.

In high school, Daria had a pessimistic view on life and a tell-it-like-it-is attitude, paired with brains that led her to top of her class. Though she was not the most involved person in high school, after she graduated with a degree in English Literature, she became an award-winning novelist. Her novels focused on the twisted and tortured life of suburban teenagers who will do anything to break out of their small towns. She says they are loosely based on her own life.
