How To Make The Most of A Snow Day in Amherst

What’s the best part of going to college somewhere that snows a lot? The greater chance of having snow days. Right now most of the country is going through something I like to refer to as snowmageddon.

The city of Amherst is covered in a wintry mix and with no hope of it stopping in the next few days, the question on everyone’s mind is how to make the most of this snow day at the zoo.

Catch Up On Sleep/Homework

It’s Wednesday and you’re still feeling the lack of sleep from all the raging this past weekend. Take all this extra time of no class as a chance to catch up on those lost hours. Not having a nine am this week was like a present from the snow gods. If you’re already in over your head with massive amounts of homework, then use the time to do all those already late assignments. You could even avoid procrastinating and get all your upcoming homework done, leaving you more time to rage this weekend. Study hard, play harder.

Drinking Games

Because it’s so gross out, the odds of you venturing outside of your dorm or house are slim to none. Leaving you limited things to do and a plethora of alcohol, your day plans suddenly become very clear. Instead of just sitting around drinking alone, grab a bunch of friends, put on movies, and drink. Your other options are basically any other drinking game. Massive game of beer pong…why not? You’ve got the time, the energy, and the solo cups, so make it happen. Pace yourself and make your snow day one to remember.

Trek to the Dining Commons

Campus may be closed, but the Dining Commons aren’t. Gather up all your drunk friends and put on your snow pants and rain boots and go to the nearest d.c. Drunken trips to the d.c are one of my favorite things to do at school. If you’re like me, you’ll go just for the french fries and grilled cheese, but if not, then there are tons of other options. I love going to the d.c with all of my sisters especially in snow storms. Definitely beats sitting in your room microwaving Easy Mac.

Sledding at Orchard Hill

If you’re someone who enjoys playing in the snow and you’re fortunate enough to live close enough to Orchard Hill, then sledding is a must. The hills in the Central and O Hill areas are prime for sledding and making snowman, basically reliving your childhood. You could also get a group of friends together for a game of snow football, and get in some early practice for Greek Week. Snow’s only fun when you’re not walking to class in it or digging out your car, so make the most of it.

Dance Parties

As night time falls on the zoo, and the alcohol is becoming more apparent in your system, it’s time to dance it all off. My sisters and I like to turn our basement into a dance party and invite everyone over, but you could do it in your dorm room, too. Even better is when you know there won’t be school again tomorrow so you can rage all night. Make a fun play list, get everyone to dress up for a random theme, and just go crazy. A party of people wearing sombreros dancing to “Pon De Floor” is my kind of night.

Snow days are basically another weekend day so make the most of them. Before you know it, spring time is going to be here and we won’t get any more random Tuesdays to rage unless you’re someone who doesn’t mind going to class hungover on a Wednesday. Have fun, rage, and avoid walking on anything that will make you even less coordinated.
