College Music Journal 2010 will bring over 1200 live performances to New York City over a five day period, with artists from over 30 countries to 75 of New York’s proudest music venues. Artists such as Green Day, Nirvana, The Killers, and Lady Gaga have all been identified by the music marathon over the past 30 years of its existence. It is only a matter of time until the name Cahn and Yang is added to the lengthy list of artists who ran over CMJ on their way to the top of the charts.
Cahn and Yang blend together catchy acoustic riffs (played by Alex Yang) that pair perfectly with the unique and powerful vocal stylings of front man Greg Cahn. The Venice, California based duo uses drum samples and loops to provide edgy beats, making them much more dynamic than most acoustic acts. Their track “So Far Away” is a perfect representation of their big, acoustic, alternative sound. Every track off of their EP, “Loyalty,” makes you feel warm. It’s easy listening, with great grooves and hooks that keeps the listener wanting more.
What really separates Cahn and Yang from other artists within a similar genre is their live show. It doesn’t seem like there is a stage large enough to contain Cahn. He is constantly in motion, dancing and roaming beyond the limits provided by the stage at New York’s Village Underground last night. He is the ultimate performer, showcasing his vocal range and outstanding presence. You can’t help but notice the smiley face on his right hand; almost metaphoric, showing Cahn is having just as much fun showcasing his talent as every audience member is having when they watch the show.
While Cahn dances and sings in the crowd with their fans, Yang shows off his musicality: Making his sometimes difficult guitar licks look effortless. He is a phenomenal musician: He put the guitar down during “Love is a Game” to play the keys. With producer/guitarist Ozzy Doniz accompanying the duo on stage, their sound could fill theaters of any size. It was a luxury seeing the group perform in a smaller venue, as something tells me the next time these guys come into town it might not be too easy to grab a ticket.
