Draft Street Presents: Old School Vs. Current Fantasy Basketball Draft

Based on the revolutionary new system at DraftStreet.com, we have decided to create our best “Old School Team” vs. “Current Team” in the fantasy basketball format.

Based on the value algorithm on DraftStreet.com for “Weekly” League on week of 3/22 – 3/29.  Each 8 member team consists of 2 guards, 2 forwards, 2 centers and 2 utility players.  The Salary Cap is $100,000.00/team.  The Current Team is an actual team drafted on DraftStreet.com.

G Steve Kerr 94-95 Chicago Bulls $6,000

8.2 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 1.8 APG, 0 BPG, 0.5 SPG 52%FG 52%3PTFG

G Jamal Crawford (4 games) – $10,197

14.5 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 3.2 APG, 0.2 BPG, 0.8 SPG, 42% FG, 34% 3PTFG

EDGE: CRAWFORD

While Kerr brings a better 3-point percentage and more steals, Crawford has the ability to put 20+ on the board every night. Over the course of the week and four games, one would assume that Crawford would have at least two blow-up games and would put up approximately 10-15 more fantasy points that Kerr.

G Gary Payton 01-02 Seattle Supersonics $12,000

22.1 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 9.0 APG, 2.1 SPG, 0.6 BPG 46& FG 31% 3PTFG

G Brandon Roy (4 games) – $10,806

14.2 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 2.7 APG, 0.3 BPG, 0.9 SPG, 40% FG, 34% 3PTFG

EDGE: PAYTON

“The Glove” would live up to his name in this matchup, providing an enormous advantage over Roy in both steals and assists. Both players can score and Payton’s overall numbers would top Roy by an average of 17 fantasy points over the week.

F Charles Barkley 86-87 Philadelphia 76ers $19,000

23.0 PPG, 14.6 RPG, 4.8 APG, 2.1 SPG, 1.5 BPG 59% FG 21% 3PTFG

F Amare Stoudemire (4 games)- $19,514

25.9 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 2.6 APG, 1.9 BPG, 0.9 SPG, 50% FG, 46% 3PTFG

EDGE: BARKLEY

In the most dynamic matchup, “Sir Charles” would overtake “S.T.A.T” because of his overwhelming advantage on the boards. Barkley averaged almost 15/game while Amare is in the 8/game range this season. The point totals are almost identical and Barkley holds the advantage in the intangible stats.

F Charles Oakley 90-91 New York Knicks $7,000

11.2 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 2.7 APG, 0.2 BPG, 0.8 SPG 51% FG 0% 3PTFG

F Zach Randolph (3 games)- $13,824

20.1 PPG, 12.6 RPG, 1.9 APG, 0.4 BPG, 0.8 SPG, 50% FG, 18% 3PTFG

EDGE: RANDOLPH

While Oakley is a solid role player for our Old School Team, he doesn’t quite match the numbers of the powerhouse that is Zach Randolph. However, Oakley is good for 10+ rebounds/game and will take care of any “Fantasy Fights” that may break out during this hypothetical matchup.

C Wilt Chamberlain 61-62 San Francisco Warriors $27,000

50.4 PPG, 25.7 RPG, 2.4 APG, NA BPG, NA SPG 50% FG NA 3PTFG

C Marcus Camby (4 games) – $12,387

5.2 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 2.1 APG, 1.7 BPG, 0.6 SPG, 40% FG, 0% 3PTFG

EDGE: CHAMBERLAIN

This edge is a no-brainer as Chamberlain put together one of the most legendary seasons of all time in 1961-1962. Wilt will single-handedly ensure victory for the Old School Team and will also tilt the scale when it come to the ever important stat of total women conquered. We went way back to select “The Stilt” to the squad, but a man like this stands any test of time.

C Rik Smits 95-96 Indiana Pacers $8,000

18.5 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.7 BPG, 0.3 SPG 52% FG 0% 3PTFG

C Nenad Krstic (4 games) – $8,686

8.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 0.4 APG, 0.4 BPG, 0.4 SPG, 51% FG, 0% 3PTFG

EDGE: SMITS

Rik Smits “The Flying Dutchman”, was a solid center for the Pacers during there run of playoff appearances in the 90s. Although his blocks are low for a center, he makes up for it with his point production. Having a center with 18+ points/game these days is nearly impossible to find (only two current centers do it). Smits has the advantage across the board over Krstic and solidifies the Center position dominance over the Current Team.

U Nick Anderson 98-99 Orlando Magic $13,000

15.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.9 APG, 0.3 BPR, 1.3 SPG 40% FG 35% 3PTFG

U Nick Young (5 games) – $12,742

17.7 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.3 BPG, 0.7 SPG, 44% FG, 39% 3PTFG

EDGE: Split

They share the same first name and the similarities don’t end there. Nick Anderson and Nick Young are both solid contributors and fit the “utility” player role perfectly. Good value and solid point production makes these picks easy to make and having either of these guys at the end of your bench will propel you into the top of your league quicker that Anderson’s trademark long range jumper leaves his hands.

U Robert Horry 95-96 Houston Rockets $8,000

12.0 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 4.0 APG, 1.5 BPG, 1.4 SPG, 41% FG, 37% 3PTFG

U Grant Hill (4 games) – $11,267

13.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 0.5 BPG, 0.8 APG, 48% FG, 38% 3PTFG

EDGE: HORRY

Mr. Clutch Robert Horry represents the Old School team at the end of the bench against the reinvigorated Grant Hill. Horry’s consistency throughout the categories are what make him the more attractive option, even though Hill has provided his fans with one final hurrah this season.

OVERALL EDGE: OLD SCHOOL TEAM

Experience wins over youth once again as our Old School Team wins over the Current Team in this battle of fantastic proportions.
