With the fall semester coming to an end and new member initiation on the horizon, Fraternities and Sororities everywhere get ready for a special night that only happens twice a year. That’s right, it’s time for formal. In Greek life, a formal is basically a mixer but everyone’s dressed up, it’s somewhere nice, and the alcohol’s a lot better. Oh, and you have to actually bring someone, you can’t just show up. Finding a date for a formal can be tricky, but I’m making it easier for all my Greeks out there by giving you the different potential dates you could bring and how your night could end up by bringing them.
1. Prince Charming/Girl of Your Dreams
This type of date is straight out of a fairy tale. It’s the person you’ve only imagined taking to a formal and never really thought it could happen. Well, my friend, some strange twist of fate worked it’s magic and you’re suddenly taking that dream person to your formal. This can go one of two ways. Hopefully you’ve actually made an attempt to get to know this person and haven’t just stared at them from across your math class every Monday and Wednesday. If you have, then you’re golden. Just have fun and don’t worry about what could go wrong. If you’ve never talked, well I would suggest immediately setting up a lunch date beforehand because otherwise this could be very awkward. Last thing you want is to take a boy you think is a god and instead is the biggest tool on campus.
2. The Same-Sex Friend
So you didn’t want to have to worry about the stress of finding a date to formal, no biggie. Taking a friend of the same sex is your safest way to make sure you’ll have a good time. Guys you won’t be stuck with a sorostitute talking about her chapter and girls you won’t have to worry about that frat daddy trying to get into your pants or your sisters. This type of date is a win-win. You can have fun, get fudgeed up, and not have to worry about anything. The only downside is that you clearly won’t be getting any so if that was your intention, I would skip down to #5.
3. Last Minute
Wait, formal is tomorrow? This date is for my procrastinators, for the ones that said, “oh yeah I’ll ask him/her tomorrow, I’ve got lots of time”. Looks like time ran out and now begins the search for who isn’t already taken. You could luck out and get someone that you would’ve asked had you not put it off. Or you could get that one person that no one else asks, for good reason. Yup, I’m talking about the hot mess that always gets a little too wasted at parties and is usually passed out in a chair by midnight. Plan ahead and avoid this date if you want a guaranteed good date.
4. Blind Date
You really don’t have anyone in mind to ask, so you tell your best friend to set you up with someone. Once again this could either go really well or really bad. You could get an awesome date, someone that you’re immediately comfortable with, and have a great night. Or you could get stuck with a pledge or a new brother/sister who really has no idea what to do with themselves. Blind dates can be fun if you’re the kind of person that can make friends with anyone. If you’re like me, and come off a little awkward when it comes to meeting new people, take someone you’re comfortable with. It’ll save a whole lot of panic when your blind date turns out to be someone just getting out a relationship that cries the whole night.
5. The Hook Up
The general assumption to anyone asking someone to a formal is that they’re gonna get it in that night by saying yes. The four types above show that that isn’t the case all the time but I couldn’t make a list about formal dates without including the obvious stereotype. Yes, people bring people that they know they can hookup with. If you have a certain hook up, odds are you will probably take them to formal. Clearly you get along so why not kill two birds with one stone since you know you’ll end up calling said person by the end of the night.
