Attending college is a great start for making plans for the future. A college degree can open up doors for a career, family and fun. While for many, college is a time for fun, freedom and exploring, it also needs to be a time in which you start thinking about how your future is going to be. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your cake and eat it too. Have fun, but remember there’s more to life than partying.
Picking the right courses and the right degree are just the beginning. You want something that will give you a job that allows you money to live the life you want and raise children, if you choose to be a parent. While you are enjoying college life, take some time to look ahead and make a plan for the future.
Saving Money For the Future
OK, we all know the last thing you are thinking about right now is saving money. Even paying your college loans off in the future is too far off to waste time on. You want to have fun, be social. However, you can have your fun and save money too.
Saving money doesn’t have to be a difficult task. You can save money by rooming with someone else, cooking meals at home, buying used textbooks and making a budget, of course. Any way you can find that takes less money out of your pocket for the things that you need leaves you that much more to save.
Another great money saving tip: Put away all the money from bottle returns (if you’re lucky enough to live in a state that has that).
Having a Career Plan For the Future
You went to college for a reason and it probably wasn’t just to party. Most people start out their college career unsure of what they really want to be. Sometimes plans change too and the world changes, so you have to be willing to alter your plan a little.
The biggest thing with career planning for your future is that when you can no longer work you want to be able to get social security so you can live comfortably into your senior years. You may also need disability, so it’s important to have a plan and have a job.
Just because you are saving for the future and planning for your future career doesn’t mean that you can’t still have fun at college. Just remember that once you have your degree the real world will call for a little less fun and a little more money. College can be a fun experience the the basic idea, among all the booze and parties, is to become a stable adult and have a hopeful future.
