It is a proven fact that there are only a few things in life that one can’t survive without. Those things include food, shelter, sex, and MUSIC. And as far as for the typical college student, they would prefer more (a lot more) of the last two things on the list. So with that said, here is a list of third-party music apps that really show the uncapped capabilities of your “iDevices.”
Pandora
This very popular music app is a “must-have “ for your mobile device. If you already have an iPhone and you haven’t downloaded this personalized radio service yet, then what are waiting for? You really have no excuse for this. I’m disappointed in you, actually. Nevertheless, if you are waiting for the Verizon iPhone to come out next month, then I will let it slide. However, let this easy-to-use app (that makes automated music recommendations based on artists and songs you like and dislike) be the first app you download. In addition, this app will serve as a great alternative to your iPod and can be a lifesaver at that campus party. Discovering new music and having the ability to buy songs and albums while listening at various online retailers is now at your fingertips. Other than that college co-ed that has had too much to drink, here is something you SHOULD really take advantage of.
VEVO
Streaming over 20,000 high-quality music videos is now effortlessly done with this free app. VEVO allows you to gracefully discover, watch, share, create playlists, and even be the first to see new video premieres right on your mobile device. Want to be the first to show your friends that new Lady Gaga or Eminem video? Well now you can.
Shazam
We all have been out to eat somewhere or at bar or party and that song comes on that is on the tip of your tongue but you can’t seem to think of the name or the name of the artist. You ask your roommate for help, but he is just as clueless. Isn’t that so frickin annoying? Well friends, with Shazam, your frustrations are cured. Just hold your iPhone as close as you can to where the music is playing and SHAZAM! In less than 10 seconds, you will have identified the artist, the song title, the album title and even have the ability to watch it on YouTube. With this free app in your pocket, you will look like a music guru. This might actually get you laid.
Beatmaker
Aspiring producers: Are you always coming up with ideas for melodies while out or away from your equipment? Or maybe you would like to start making beats but can’t afford the necessary tools. Worry no more. This sophisticated $10 music app (I bought it for $20, damn) will help you become a super-producer in no time. Beatmaker will allow you to create your own sound kits and samples to construct real-time sequence recordings that can be exported in either WAV or AIFF audio file formats. If you just understood what I just said, then this is a big deal! With this beat making app at the palm of your hands, your musical imagination could be limitless. I should warn you, there is a bit of a learning curve if you’re new to producing. But, you’re in college, so learning is something you should be use to by now.
Smule Ocarina
What is an Ocarina, you ask? It is a very impressive musical instrument, similar to a flute or recorder that is played right on your iPhone or iPod. Usually when I get into a debate with my friends over who has the better phone, I love to bring this app out as my secret weapon. This generally shuts them up immediately. Smule’s Ocarina app is played by blowing into your iPhone’s microphone while using your fingers to tap on the four digital notes. There is a whole website dedicated to this virtual instrument and has the sheet music of your favorite tunes to attempt to play. It will take some practice to get used to, but, this is one of kind app is insanely addicting and is well worth the 99 cents. Good luck and have fun.
