Kimbo in Limbo – Bryan Alvarez Grapples with the Fallout from UFC 113

By: Scott Yager

One fighter gets BANNED from UFC forever for sucker punching his opponent after the final bell, another fan favorite is forced to find new employment and SHOGUN RUA is the NEW LIGHT HEAYWEIGHT CHAMPION! It was an action packed weekend in MMA that centered around UFC 113: SHOGUN vs MACHIDA II. Following this game-changing event and heading into the big Rampage vs. Evans fight at the end of the month, it seems like all eyes are on UFC and the world of MMA. I could not think of a better time to catch up with our friend Bryan Alvarez from wrestlingobserver.com and figure four weekly.

In addition to our discussion of the Shogun-Machida showdown, Alvarez has plenty to say the implication of Kimbo Slice’s release from the UFC and his freedom to join any other MMA promotion. One would think he will wind up in Strikeforce which at this point is the closest thing the USA has to a number two promotion. Alvarez and I talk about Kimbo being let go and the affect it will have on the world of MMA. Coming off a pathetic performance this Saturday it was clear he did not have what it takes to compete in the UFC. Whether he still can command an audience and draw ratings is a whole different story. There is a good chance people will still be interested in watching him fight. Any way you slice it though…Kimbo sucks.

Now I know what you’re thinking…wrestlingobserver.com? But UFC is real. Wrestling is fake. They aren’t the same thing…no stuff. But over at wrestlingobserver.com Bryan Alvarez, Dave Meltzer and the rest of their staff cover the world of MMA just as closely as they do pro wrestling. These guys know their stuff. Their site is the best place for news on all MMA and every big story is broken there first.  Their relationship with the world of pro wrestling only enhances their ability to assess mixed martial arts not only for the sport that it is but also for the entertainment fix it provides us all.  Check out my audio interview with Bryan Alvarez after the jump to hear all about UFC 113 and all of the aftermath. If you like what you hear, log onto Alvarez’s site where they have several new audio programs a week on both wrestling and MMA.
