Bold move, Ohio State. It took a real set of stones for you to suspend five players, including your starting quarterback, top running back, and #2 wide receiver for the first five games next season, but bypass the upcoming Sugar Bowl. The suspensions are a result of these student-athletes selling awards, gifts, and apparel, including Big Ten Championship rings, for as much as $2,500.
In doing so, they are rewarding a handful of rule-breaking student-athletes by allowing them to play in one of college football’s most prestigious bowl games. While their self-imposed suspensions are within NCAA limits, they are showing fans across the country that they lack the guts to levy any immediate discipline.
The fact is that QB Terrelle Pryor, RB Dan “Boom” Herron, and WR DeVier Posey can all potentially declare for the NFL Draft, and get away with their improprieties scot free. Given that, the OSU brass should be ashamed of how they’ve handled the latest scandal in college football. The suspensions are a complete joke and serve as a slap in the face to the NCAA, the Big Ten, and law-abiding programs across the nation.
After Ohio State President Gordon Gee spoke out a few weeks ago about non-BCS schools being undeserving of the opportunity to participate in BCS games, it’s time for other university presidents and public figures to speak out about OSU’s ridiculously poor handling of these suspensions.
Congratulations, Buckeyes. We all look forward to see how you respond to an alleged autograph-for-tattoo scandal in which several of your players have been implicated.
