When I’m waiting in line at the grocery store and flipping through US Weekly and People mag, I expect to see “Stars Without Makeup,” “Stars Who Have Cellulite,” and “Who Wore It Best?” Not Miley Cyrus smoking from a bong or Demi Lovato’s latest news from rehab.
For some reason, it has become acceptable for the media to zero in on teenage girls and expose what they’re doing, who they’re seeing, what they’re buying, and maybe even what they’re smoking.
Having your face stamped across the cover of a glossy magazine and making a million dollars a year isn’t your typical upbringing though. When I was their age, I had braces, an almost uni-brow, and no hope for a boyfriend. These chicks have a few million in the bank, designer clothing, and movie star boyfriends.
And now in the age of cell phone cameras, flip video recorders, and Perez Hilton, these young women have little to no privacy or chance of a normal teenage life. And for some reason, it always seems that Disney tween stars are the ones who rebel the most and lose their path a bit.
The queen of bad decision making and Disney’s original break-out star, Lindsay Lohan, started out as the adorable ginger in “The Parent Trap” and when you see it now, it’s almost hard to believe that they’re the same person.
Now the Lindsay Lohan we all know and don’t really love, just got out of jail for 2 DUI’s and drug possession. Oh, and now she’s in rehab. Oh, and this is her fourth time there. Get it together, girl, we were all really looking forward to seeing you in that Linda Lovelace porn star movie. But now we will just have to wait until you release a sex tape of your own, shouldn’t be too long now!
Speaking of rehab, another Disney star just checked in, 18-year-old Demi Lovato. I was actually kind of sad when I heard about Lovato, she seemed like an okay chick. Sure, she dated Joe Jonas, but no one is perfect.
The singer and actress has her own TV show on Disney “Sonny With A Chance” and starred in the “Camp Rock” movies with the Jonas Brothers. In addition to a world tour with the Jonas Brothers, Lovato has two CD’s which have topped the Billboard charts. Hit movies and CD’s, a TV show, and a world tour before she could legally even drink a beer, that takes some dedication.
But the fast track to fame wasn’t exactly what Lovato was expecting as she checked into rehab and left the JoBro’s world tour on November 1. Her reps said that Lovato is being treated for “emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time”, not substance abuse.
And last, but certainly not least, we have Miley Cyrus. The recently turned 18-year-old star has made headlines for her latest scandal, as videos of her smoking salvia out of a bong went viral on the Internet. There’s been no word from Miley’s camp on the video, and apparently it was taken after her 18th birthday in the privacy of her own home. I don’t really understand what the big deal is considering saliva is legal and all, but I guess seeing Hannah Montana with her mouth around a pretty legit bong isn’t what parents want their kids to see.
All in all, I sort-of feel bad for these young women. They were thrust into the spotlight so young, and have been working and providing for their families their entire lives. Teenage years should be spent going to football games, egging people’s houses, and stealing your parent’s bourbon, not having a whole camp of people relying on you to put food in their mouths.
