Taylor Swift, the 20-year-old country songbird who has already won Grammy’s, Country Music Awards, and American Music Awards (to name a few), just released her latest album “Speak Now” yesterday, October 25. Swift, who is also referred to as Swifty, T-Swizzle, and Tay-Tay, is known for writing about her real-life experiences in songs, and not holding back.
Swift has been in quite a few high-profile relationships with young, famous guys, and apparently they have given her plenty of song-writing material. She’s never one to shy away from writing real lyrics about actual experiences and she offers no apologies or explanations to the people she mentions. Swift said it best in a recent interview with USA Today that, “This is my third album, I’ve never been shy about the fact that if you enter my life, you are basically willingly entering an album.”
Every time a new Taylor Swift CD comes out, I am happy that she wrote about all her exes and the way they treated her, good or bad. I mean, what actually happened with Taylor Lautner? Was Taylor squared too much for her? Or did Joe Jonas cheat on Tay-Tay with Camilla Belle? Is that girl really a slut? Is Joe Jonas really a virgin? So many questions, not enough T-Swift songs.
Swift’s latest album, “Speak Now”, is supposedly full of romantic innuendos, apologies, and rants at former flings, boyfriends, and new girlfriends. So here’s a look at some of the celebs who have been “spotlighted” by Taylor in “Speak Now”.
Taylor Lautner
“So this is me swallowing my pride
Standing in front of you saying I’m sorry for that night
And I go back to December all the time
It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you
Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine”
-Back To December
Taylor and Taylor dated last year about this time, and ended it last December after three months of dating. A young romance blossomed between the two after they both worked on the movie “Valentine’s Day”, Lautner and Swift played a couple in the film, and I guess some of these feelings spilled into their personal lives. Swift’s musical ode to Lautner can be heard on “Speak Now” with “Back to December”.
“Back to December” is a rare song for Swift, who instead of pointing out the faults and missteps of her exes, places the blame on herself. Swift even admitted that the song was an “almost word for word” conversation she had with one of her exes. Inside her album covers in the lyric book, Swift is known for putting hidden messages inside by capitalizing certain letters to reveal a secret message. Back to December’s hidden message: TAY. I think, this one speaks for itself.
Joe Jonas
“Were you just kidding?
’cause it seems to me, this thing is breaking down
We almost never speak
I don’t feel welcome anymore
Baby what happened, please tell me?”
-Forever and Always
Swifty dated this JoBro back in 2008, and they seemed like a perfect teeny-bopper couple who didn’t dare go past first base. Their squeaky clean image fell apart though, when Joe reportedly dumped Taylor in a 27-second phone call. Not one to keep her silence, Swift talked about the split on the Ellen DeGeneres show and said “I’m not even going to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 27 seconds when I was 18.” You go girl.
On her album “Fearless”, Swift sings “Forever and Always” about Jonas, and the hidden message in the lyric book said “If you play games we’re both going to lose”. The lyrics are about a relationship fading away and asking what went wrong, so it seems my beloved T-Swizzle was head over heels for this one and broken-hearted after it. “Speak Now” also has a song that is supposedly about Jonas called “Last Kiss”. The song is heart-felt and is about missing someone, suggesting that maybe Taylor has had time to heal since their harsh 27 second break-up. Another tell-tale sign the song is for the JoBro, the hidden message is “FOREVER AND ALWAYS”.
John Mayer
“Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone
Don’t you think I was too young, To be messed with
The girl in the dress, Cried the whole way home
I should’ve known.”
-Dear John
Perhaps the most talked about song off her new album, “Dear John” is a song written for John Mayer, the singer/songwriter who Swift worked with and secretly dated. There was speculation that the two were dating, but the age difference seemed too large and Swift seemed too innocent to date such a notorious player. Alas, the truth has come forward and at one point Taylor and John were an item.
Two songs off “Speak Now” are about Mayer, “Dear John” and “The Story of Us”. It is self-explanatory the connection with “Dear John”, Taylor sings in the song about being too young and not listening to the people who told her to back away.
As for “The Story of Us”, many speculated that the song was about Joe Jonas or Taylor Lautner because it refers to an awards show, but the hidden message Swift gives us suggests otherwise. “CMTAWARDS” spell out her hidden message for this one, and it seems that that night John Mayer was performing with Keith Urban and I guess, didn’t make time at all for our favorite blonde-haired country singer.
Camilla Belle
“She’s not a saint and she’s not what you think
She’s an actress, Whoa
She’s better known for the things that she does
On the mattress, Whoa”
-Better than Revenge
Camilla Belle is the girl who supposedly took Joe Jonas away from Taylor. They started dating pretty soon after Taylor and Joe broke up, and Swift’s song “Better than Revenge” on “Speak Now” seems to be gunning for Camilla. The hidden message in the song reads “YOU THOUGHT I WOULD FORGET”. Watch yo back, Camilla, no one has even seen you in anything since that Disney Channel flick about surfer girls 15 years ago. The lyrics above don’t portray Camilla in the best light, and I doubt she’s very happy about the attention the song is giving her bedroom skills.
Kanye West
“It’s okay, life is a tough crowd
32, and still growin’ up now
Who you are is not what you did
You’re still an innocent
Time turns flames to embers
You’ll have new Septembers
Every one of us has messed up too”
-Innocent
The infamous interruption by Kanye West during Swift’s acceptance speech for “Best Female Video” was heard around the world, with Kanye saying he needed to take a break to reflect, and Taylor looking classy as usual by keeping it together. “Imma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time” probably wasn’t what Taylor wanted to hear after winning her first VMA. Swift responded to the whole incident by doing a surprise performance at this years VMA’S singing a song she wrote called “Innocent”. The lyrics make it pretty plain to see the song is about Mr. West, and it seems Taylor knows how to forgive someone as it is a recurring theme in her music.
So now that Taylor is supposedly dating Jake Gyllenhaal, how long will it be until he gets a song about him?
